Photography Practice – Nashville’s 12 South Neighborhood
When I moved to Nashville in 1996, 12th Avenue south was a scary place. Really scary. My beautician had a shop in the spot that is now the Frothy Monkey. When I left her shop after dark, she would watch me walk to my car to make sure I didn’t have an unfortunate run- in with some of the interesting characters that walked those streets after dark. The car wash across the street, was a meeting spot for drug dealers and there was an empty lot that was littered with all types of unmentionables. Boy how times have changed. The revitalization of 12 south has been amazing to watch. Abandoned and rundown buildings have been replaced by an eclectic mix of eateries, coffee houses, and shops. If you have the occasion to visit 12 South, check out the pizza at Mafiaozas’ or the burgers at Burger Up.
