Couch to 5k – Week 1
I may not have told you but I’m starting to check things off of my bucket list. There are some really grand things on my list like staying in a villa in Italy but there are a bunch of small things that are more unfinished business than anything. Running a 5k is a little bit of unfinished business. I set that goal a couple of years ago and bailed because running made me feel like I was in the ninth circle of hell. It was downright painful plus it was really boring. Even though I hated running, it was always in the back of my mind that I had given up for no good reason or than laziness, which didn’t sit well with me. I’ve decided to give running another try.
Completely by accident, I ran across the 5k101 podcast by Running Mate. It’s an 8 week program that literally takes you from being a couch potato to running for 30 minutes straight. You do the program three days a week with at least 1 day of rest in between. Last week was my first week on the program and I’m happy to report that it didn’t kill me. Don’t get me wrong – it wasn’t easy. The first two days my calves burned so bad I didn’t think I would make it. (Lesson Learned - Poor form when you’re jogging can cause alot a pain and fatigue). The third day, I started to figure it out and it hurt a little less. This week I’m doing the first week program over again and I’m actually starting to like it. Running with a goal in mind helps make it a alot more fun. The podcast has pretty good music and Todd Lang (the founder of Running Mate) coaches you along as you walk/run but not in an annoying kind of way. If all goes well, I’m going to do the Boulevard Bolt in November. YAY!!

August 15, 2012I did the couch to 5k program a couple of years ago…I think it took me 5 weeks to complete the first 2 weeks of the program. But it was amazing and I am so glad that I did it.
You will miss days here and there don’t stress and keep to it!
